Afghanistan Earthquake | Maxar OpenData | On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. It has been estimated that more than 1,000 have been killed and many more wounded. Houses have been reduced to rubble and an unknown number of people remain stuck under debris. In outlaying areas rescue operations were complicated by difficult conditions including heavy rain, landslides and villages being located in inaccessible hillsides areas. Wednesday's earthquake was the deadliest in Afghanistan since 2022. It struck about 27 miles (44 km) from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan. |
Bay of Bengal Cyclone Mocha 2023 | Maxar OpenData | Cyclone Mocha, a category five cyclone with 130 mph winds and torrential rain, hit parts of Myanmar and Bangladesh, forcing mass evacuations ahead of the storm. The cyclone, one of the most powerful to hit the region in the last decade, made landfall on Sunday, May 14, 2023, near Sittwe in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Rain and a storm surge caused widespread flooding in low-lying areas. The United National Office Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that there had been extensive damage among already vulnerable communities and that communications with the affected areas have been difficult. |

Emilia Romagna Italy Flooding | Maxar OpenData | Severe flooding in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region has forced the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents after two days of torrential rain. More than 14 rivers crested their banks forcing people to climb onto the roofs of buildings and homes, awaiting rescue. Dozens of cities and towns have been submerged and thousands of landslides have occurred in what has been called the worst floods to affect Italy in a century. Up to 27,000 people have been left without power according to the Italian distributor of electricity and gas. |
The Gambia Flooding | Maxar OpenData | Record flooding in The Gambia has caused widespread damage, including submerged roads and destroyed buildings. The rainfall measured 10.87 inches (276 mm) at Banjul International Airport, the heaviest recorded in more than 30 years. As of August 9, 2022, six fatalities have been reported and more than 17,200 people affected by the floods. The Gambia Red Cross said its volunteers have been working around the clock to distribute supplies and help families relocate to emergency shelters. |
Ghana Explosion | Maxar OpenData | On Sunday, January 20, 2022, a motorbike collided with a truck carrying 10 tons of explosives causing a blast that leveled the entire town of Apiate, located in western Ghana. The explosives were being delivered to the nearby Chirano gold mine. The small town was reduced to rubble, timber and twisted metal, with a large crater at the center of the explosion. As of January 24, 13 people had been killed and approximately 200 injured. |
