Hurricane Idalia Maxar OpenData | Hurricane Idalia made landfall on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, as a Category 3 storm, hitting the Gulf Coast of Florida with catastrophic flooding and record-breaking storm surge. Maximum sustained winds reached 125 mph causing flooded street, closed airports and widespread power outages. Storm surge damage could stretch over 200 miles along Florida's coast. Both Georgia and South Carolina had announced a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm's possible effects on the region.
Hurricane Milton Maxar OpenData | Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene, Hurrican Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico and grew to a Category 5 storm. Though it weakened to Category 3 before making landfall in Florida, it still killed 28 people and caused 30b USD in damages.

Indonesia Earthquake 2022 Maxar OpenData | On Monday, November 21, 2022, a deadly earthquake hit the town of Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. The earthquake was about six miles below the Earth's surface, and more than one million people experienced strong tremors. The magnitude 5.6 quake reduced buildings to rubble, killing more than 300 people, injuring hundreds of people, and leaving more than 70,000 people displaced.
Turkey and Syria Earthquake 2023 Maxar OpenData | A devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Turkish province of Kahramanmaras, approximately 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi in the Gaziantep province near the Syrian border, at 4:17 a.m. local time on Monday, February 6, 2023, followed by a 7.5 magnitude aftershock nine hours later. More than 6,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria, and tens of thousands of people have been injured. Those numbers are expected to increase as search and rescue activities continue. At least 13 million people in the region have been impacted by the earthquake and aftershock. Turkey's president declared a three-month state of emergency in the 10 provinces hardest hit by the earthquake.
Kalehe DRC Flooding 2023 Maxar OpenData | Devastating floods and landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo's South Kivu province have killed more than 400 people in one of the country's deadliest disasters in recent history. Flash floods washed away homes and buried the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi in debris. According to United Nations officials, hundreds of people remain unaccounted for, and 3,000 families are now homeless because of the tragedy. Climate experts say warming temperatures are increasing the intensity and frequency of Africa's rains, making these types of events more catastrophic.
Kentucky Flooding Maxar OpenData | Extreme flooding in Kentucky has washed away roads, destroyed up to 50 bridges and swept away entire homes, displacing thousands of people. As of August 1, 2022, 30 people have been confirmed dead, with those number expected to rise as hundreds are currently unaccounted for. In a press conference, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said more than 600 people have been rescued by aircraft and boat since the flooding began. More rain is expected in the area, further complicating emergency response efforts.
Libya Floods Maxar OpenData | Thousands of people are reported to have died and at least 10,000 more are missing in Libya after a devastating Mediterranean storm burst dams, triggering flash floods that swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern coastal city of Derna. The death toll is likely to be much higher once emergency crews are able to access the entire area. As of Tuesday, September 12, 2023, more than 40,000 have been displaced.
Marshall Fire Maxar OpenData | The Marshall Fire started on December 30, 2021 west of Boulder, Colorado. Driven by high winds, the fire progressed eastwards into the towns of Superior and Louisville. Over 1000 homes and buildings were burned.
Maui Fires Maxar OpenData | A series of grassland wildfires driven by high winds broke out on the Hawaiian island of Hawaii on August 8, 2023. The fires spread to the town of Lahaina, killing at least 97 people and leaving at least 31 others missing.
